WooCommerce Payment Method Restriction gives store owners a way to control checkout payment options that WooCommerce does not offer out of the box. By default, every payment gateway shows up for every order, no matter the price or product type.

That works fine for simple stores. It breaks down once a business sells higher value items, fragile goods, or products that need stricter payment terms. Allowing cash on delivery for expensive orders can increase refused deliveries and unnecessary shipping costs.

This plugin fixes that gap with rule based controls. Store owners can limit payment options at the product level, the category level, or by total cart value, depending on what fits their catalog.

Two setup modes cover different needs. Manual mode applies rules to specific products and categories. Cart Rules mode works on price ranges, so the checkout adjusts automatically as the cart total changes.

Stores with mixed catalogs, expensive products, or category specific payment policies benefit most from this setup. Fewer unsuitable payment choices at checkout means fewer cancelled orders and less manual cleanup for the support team.

If you also want to simplify purchases in a multi vendor store, pair this extension with WooCommerce Marketplace Single Seller Checkout to let customers place separate orders for individual sellers.

Why Do You Need WooCommerce Payment Method Restriction?

WooCommerce Payment Method Restriction solves a gap most growing stores run into. Standard WooCommerce shows every active gateway to every buyer, with no built in way to match payment methods to the order value or product type.

This becomes a real issue for stores selling high value or sensitive items. Customers can still choose payment methods that do not match the order value or product type.

Fixing this without a plugin usually means custom checkout code, which is slow to build and risky to maintain across updates.

This plugin replaces that manual effort with straightforward rules at the product, category, and cart level. Store owners running high value catalogs get a checkout that reflects their actual business policy instead of a generic default.

If you also want to offer customers another convenient way to pay, pair this extension with WooCommerce Wallet System so customers can pay using their wallet balance.

    Use Cases

WooCommerce Payment Method Restriction supports several everyday checkout scenarios.

    Limiting Cash On Delivery

Block cash on delivery once the cart total passes a set amount, cutting down on failed high value deliveries.

    Restricted Product Categories

Allow only selected payment methods for fragile, digital, or high risk categories.

    Single Product Payment Rules

Fix the payment method list for one product, regardless of its category setting.

    Mixed Cart Checkout

Show only payment methods shared across all matching product or category restrictions.

    Restriction Type Selection

This setting controls how WooCommerce Payment Method Restriction works across the store by letting the store owner choose between Manual mode and Cart Rules mode.

Manual mode fits stores that manage rules by product or category. Cart Rules mode helps stores that want checkout options tied directly to order value.

    • Pick Manual mode for product and category level rules
    • Pick Cart Rules mode for price range based rules
    • Only one mode stays active at a time
    • Switch modes anytime from the settings page
    • Applies across the entire store once selected
    Restriction Type Selection

    Product Based Payment Restriction

This feature lets the store owner set allowed payment methods for one specific product, separate from any category setting.

It works only in Manual mode. The plugin checks product restrictions first and checks the category only when no product restriction exists.

    • Choose allowed payment methods per product
    • Edit the rule anytime from the product page
    • Product restrictions are checked before category restrictions in Manual mode
    • Works on new and existing product listings
    • Customers only see the payment methods allowed for that product
    Product Based Payment Restriction

    Category Based Payment Restriction

Category level rules apply one payment method setting to every product inside a chosen category, saving time on large catalogs.

This suits stores with clear product groupings, such as electronics, fragile goods, or digital items that each need different payment handling.

    • Choose allowed payment methods per category
    • Rule applies to all products in that category
    • Used when no product restriction is configured
    • Edit category settings anytime from the category page
    • Removes manual setup time for large catalogs
    Category Based Payment Restriction

    Cart Value Based Restriction

Cart Rules mode ties payment method visibility to the total cart value instead of individual products or categories.

This fits stores that want checkout behavior linked to order size, such as blocking cash on delivery past a set amount.

    • Set a minimum and maximum value for each range
    • Assign allowed payment methods per range
    • Create multiple cart total ranges with separate payment methods
    • Edit or remove any existing rule

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does every rule need at least one selected payment method?
Yes. Each rule should include at least one allowed payment method. Otherwise, customers may not see any available payment option at checkout.

Can two cart rules share overlapping price ranges?
No. Cart rules should use separate price ranges. Overlapping ranges are not supported. For example, a range of 100 to 200 prevents another rule from using 150 to 300.

How does the checkout change under Cart Rules mode?
The checkout displays only the payment methods assigned to the price range that matches the current cart total.

What happens when a cart contains products from different restricted categories?
Only the payment methods that are common across all matching category restrictions are shown during checkout.

Does a product rule override a category rule?
Yes. In Manual mode, the plugin checks the product restriction first. If no payment restriction is configured for the product, it then checks the product category restriction.

Can Manual mode and Cart Rules mode run at the same time?
No. Only one mode stays active at a time. Switching modes changes the rule behavior across the entire store.

Can a saved cart rule be edited later?
Yes. Any cart rule can be edited or removed at any time from the plugin settings page.
