Odoo POS Partial Payment is an Odoo point of sale module that lets customers pay part of the bill now. The cashier can validate the order and leave the rest of the amount due for a later date.

At checkout, the cashier enters the amount the customer pays, selects Invoice, and types a remark. After the cashier clicks Validate, Odoo creates the invoice and the POS moves on to the receipt screen.

Each partially paid order produces a posted customer invoice that shows the paid amount and the amount due. The invoice carries a Partial ribbon and the remark, so the balance is easy to spot later.

An admin turns the feature on for each POS shop with the Allow Partial Payment checkbox. A payment term can carry the Don't Allow Partial Payment In POS flag to exclude chosen customers from pay-later sales.

When the customer returns with the balance, an accountant opens the invoice and uses Register Payment to record it. Installment payments and pay-later deals follow the standard Odoo accounting flow.

Additionally, if you want cashiers to add notes to orders and order lines at the counter, then check Odoo POS Order Notes.

Highlighted Features of Odoo POS Partial Payment

     Accept Partial Payments

Validate a POS order when the customer pays only part of the total, or nothing at all.

     Customer Invoice for Unpaid Orders

Create a posted customer invoice that shows the amount paid and the amount still due.

     Record Payment Remarks

Ask the cashier for a remark, such as the date the customer will pay the rest of the bill.

     Control Access with Payment Terms

Block the pay-later option for customers whose payment term has partial payment turned off.

Why Do We Need Odoo POS Partial Payment?

Odoo POS Partial Payment fills a gap in the standard Odoo point of sale, which needs full payment to validate a sale.

Customers who buy costly items often cannot pay the whole bill at the counter. Without a pay-later option, the store either loses the sale or tracks the debt on paper, outside Odoo.

With this module, the cashier takes the amount the customer can pay and validates the order. The rest stays open on a customer invoice, and the accountant collects it later through Register Payment.

In practice, the cashier types a note such as Will Pay later in 10 days in the Remark box. That note then appears in the Remark field of the invoice, next to the amount due.

Also, if you want POS orders to stay in step across several sessions, you can check our extension Odoo POS Order Sync.

    Use Cases

    • High-Value Furniture Sales

A furniture shop takes a deposit on a large table at the counter and collects the balance when the table is delivered.

    • Pay Later for Regular Customers

A store lets its known customers take goods now and pay the full amount at the end of the month.

    • Installment Payments at the Counter

An electronics retailer splits a costly order into several payments, each registered on the same invoice.

    • Walk-In Customers Without Credit

A shop keeps walk-in buyers on full payment by assigning them a payment term that blocks partial payment.

Allow partial payment from the Odoo backend

The Allow Partial Payment setting turns on pay-later sales for a POS shop. An admin ticks it under Point of Sale > Configuration > Point of Sale, in the Pricing section.

    • Tick Allow Partial Payment to let the seller invoice and validate partially paid orders.
    • Enable the option for each POS shop that should accept pay-later sales.
    • Open Invoicing > Configuration > Payment Terms to set exceptions for customers.
    • Tick Don't Allow Partial Payment In POS on a payment term to block pay-later sales for it.
    • Change payment terms from the Odoo backend at any time, without editing POS settings.

See the partial payment option in the POS session

The Payment screen of the POS session accepts an amount lower than the Total Due. The cashier selects Invoice, types a remark, and clicks Validate to complete the partial payment order.

    • Enter the amount the customer pays now, with Remaining showing the unpaid balance.
    • Select Invoice so Odoo creates a customer invoice for the order.
    • Type a remark, such as the date the customer plans to pay the rest.
    • Print or email the receipt, which lists the order total and the amount paid.
    • Open the order under Orders > Orders to view the remark on the partial payment invoice.
    • Click Register Payment on the invoice when the customer pays the amount due.

We have purchased several Webkul modules for Odoo POS and they are the best we have seen. We had some compatibility issues but the support team provided excellent care in solving all problems.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does Odoo POS Partial Payment do?
Odoo POS Partial Payment lets a cashier validate a POS order when the customer pays only part of the total. Odoo creates a customer invoice for the order, and the balance is collected later from the backend.

Can the cashier validate an order with no payment at all?
Yes, the cashier can validate an unpaid order, and the full order amount then stays due on the customer invoice.

How do I turn on partial payment in POS?
Go to Point of Sale > Configuration > Point of Sale and open the shop. Tick Allow Partial Payment in the Pricing section, save, and then open a new POS session to use it.

Can I stop some customers from paying partially?
Yes, open Invoicing > Configuration > Payment Terms and tick Don't Allow Partial Payment In POS on a payment term. Customers who use that payment term must pay the full amount, even when the POS shop allows partial payment.

Is a remark required for a partial payment order?
Yes, the cashier must type a remark on the Payment screen before validating a partially paid order. Odoo saves that remark on the customer invoice, where the team can read it later.

How is the remaining amount collected?
An accountant opens the partial payment invoice in the Odoo backend and clicks Register Payment. The payment can be recorded in one step or across several installments until the amount due reaches zero.

Where can I see the remark after the sale?
Open Point of Sale > Orders > Orders, select the order, and click Invoice. The Remark field on the invoice shows the note the cashier entered at checkout.

Which Odoo versions does the module support?
